Minimizing a sum of submodular functions

چکیده

We consider the problem of minimizing a function represented as a sum of submodular terms. We assume each term allows an efficient computation of exchange capacities. This holds, for example, for terms depending on a small number of variables, or for certain cardinalitydependent terms. A naive application of submodular minimization algorithms would not exploit the existence of specialized exchange capacity subroutines for individual terms. To overcome this, we cast the problem as a submodular flow (SF) problem in an auxiliary graph, and show that applying most existing SF algorithms would rely only on these subroutines. We then explore in more detail Iwata’s capacity scaling approach for submodular flows [18]. In particular, we show how to improve its complexity in the case when the function contains cardinality-dependent terms.

On the Convergence Rate of Decomposable Submodular Function Minimization

Submodular functions describe a variety of discrete problems in machine learn-ing, signal processing, and computer vision. However, minimizing submodularfunctions poses a number of algorithmic challenges. Recent work introduced aneasy-to-use, parallelizable algorithm for minimizing submodular functions thatdecompose as the sum of “simple” submodular functions. Empirically, this ...

Exploiting Sum of Submodular Structure for Inference in Very High Order MRF-MAP Problems

Several tasks in computer vision and machine learning can be modeled as MRF-MAP inference problems. Using higher order potentials to model complex dependencies can significantly improve the performance. The problem can often be modeled as minimizing a sum of submodular (SoS) functions. Since sum of submodular functions is also submodular, existing submodular function minimization (SFM) techniqu...

Minimization of locally-de ned submodular functions by optimal soft arc consistency

Submodular function minimization is a polynomially-solvable combinatorial problem. Unfortunately the best known general-purpose algorithms have high-order polynomial time complexity. In many applications the objective function is locally-de ned in that it is the sum of cost functions (also known as soft or valued constraints) whose arities are bounded by a constant. We prove that every Valued C...

Algorithms for Approximate Minimization of the Difference Between Submodular Functions, with Applications

We extend the work of Narasimhan and Bilmes [30] for minimizing set functions representable as a difference between submodular functions. Similar to [30], our new algorithms are guaranteed to monotonically reduce the objective function at every step. We empirically and theoretically show that the per-iteration cost of our algorithms is much less than [30], and our algorithms can be used to effi...
